Dear tempeh, you will always have my heart <3 If you’re new to plant based eating or just looking for another protein source to add to your meals, tempeh is a must-try! For this flavorful plant-based dish, all you need is your favorite BBQ sauce and a package of tempeh. From there, you can get creative! I served mine with organic brown rice and steamed broccoli here, but you can even add these to salads!
So…what is tempeh, anyway? What does it taste like? Is it similar to tofu? These are all questions I had before finally giving it a fair try. Tempeh is a soy-based protein with a dense, chewy texture that is super versatile and easy to make. It has more of slightly nutty/mushroom flavor to it when compared to tofu. In my opinion, the texture is 10/10 and reminds me of eating a savory meat! (Sorry tofu, you definitely do not give me that experience!).
This BBQ tempeh makes for the perfect easy dinner and even is a great protein to meal prep to have on hand for the week. If you pass by tempeh in the grocery stores and are still unsure if you should try it out, I encourage you to give it a go. I promise you won’t regret it!
BBQ Tempeh
Ingredients:
1 package tempeh (Trader Joe’s sprouted 3-grain tempeh is my go-to and reasonably priced)
1/2 cup your favorite BBQ sauce (I used Primal Kitchen Golden BBQ sauce…total game changer)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.
- To make the tempeh, cut into small cubes or longer strips and coat in your favorite BBQ sauce
- Add the tempeh to a baking tray and roast in the oven for about 30 minutes.
- Serve over rice with veggies or crumble in a salad for extra protein. Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to one week in an airtight container!
